The corporate biscuit 2.0
A lot of people ask me these questions
why do I never wear casuals on Fridays,
why don't I come in ethnic wear on the ethnic day,
why is that I get offended when we have to wait in queue to get the food(often overpriced) from KFC, McDonalds, and Pizza..s
My answer is simple! I don't wish to eat the corporate biscuit.
This blog articles of mine again falls back to Taylor! Please read the article below this one, named "corporate biscuit"!
Corporate biscuit!...Goshhh...I love this term!
We are increasingly/mostly working for the developed nations, wearing their dress, eating their foods, and being culturally closest to them within our possible limits. We have become cultural half breeds, shying away from our our national identity and not comfortable with foreign cultures and its shock!
We are definitely in a transition phase.
In this phase I feel uncomfortable to eat this corporate biscuit, which is designed in such a way that we scientifically, psychologically and culturally adapt ourselves to become something we are not.
I might be wrong, may be you are very comfortable with waiting in queues for your half cooked yummy genetically "thought about and designed" (not engineered! Don't sue me!) chicken, fine...I appreciate your levels of comfort and adaptation in this transitional phase.
My question is...why is that we find it so hard to stand in queues in our Nationalized banks and passport offices, moreover a fat bank balance and a passport are definitely healthier than the junk foods!
And yeah...Casual on Fridays and ethnic wear!
Our feeble resistance to our own disliking towards the changes that we willingly subject ourselves to.
Well, I might definitely sound like a lunatic!
But dear readers, if you fall under the category or the generation who heartily embraced the transition, thanks to you, because you made India, into what it is today...A Developing Nation.
Whereas I call upon all those who are uncomfortable with all this, to start living to make India, A Developed Nation. In that case, we absolutely have no luxury to eat the corporate biscuit!
For most of the times, I have always been mistaken, I am sure this article succeeded to be mistaken as well. Can't help!
So, let me clearly put in bulleted points, what I DID NOT mean in this article.

- I am not blaming the foreign countries here...Thank you for seeing the potentiality of India as a country and Indians as a workforce.
- McDonalds and KFC...don't take me wrong...I love your chickens, but Indians please don't mind standing in queue at our own very dear banks...India escaped recession with jsut bruises because of the nationalized banks! Not convinced? ask the real economists, who usually don't talk in media for cameras.
What I MEANT to say...
- This is a globalized economy, information era.
- We serve our services to developed nations, they pay us, we buy their foods and give it back!
- Nothing wrong with that, all this is just a beautiful design, and to twist this design to our benefit, while not losing the benefits it offers us, and to make way for the development of India as a Nation, is entrusted upon U and Me. Lets act fast.

Who's Mr.Taylor?
There was this person named Frederick Winslow Taylor who postulated the Principles of Scientific management, with the results of his wonderful experimentations in the Bethlehem Steel corporation. Let me just tell you what the principle is all about...simply put, it just tries to say that upon clear investigation and experimentation, we can narrow down to one optimum way of doing a work, with the least possible fatigue. That's how he narrowed down to a shovel size with which the labourers can carry 21.5 pounds of raw unprocessed iron. The exact weight of 21.5 pounds means that the labourers can work all day (in the optimised pattern) with the least possible fatigue and the maximum utilization of energy to provide maximum possible productivity. Essentially this was a win-win situation, but like every good idea, this principle too was not very unwelcome, and later I do not know what happened to it.
The Reason: we are humans, not machines, to work in a defined mechanised pattern.
Sounds really sensible!..Doesn't it?!
We can't be sure if this ideology of the aggressive capitalistic era still holds good today.
But had you thought about what you just read and asked me, I would give it a big YES, the difference being that there is nobody imposing it on us. Rather, we impose it on ourselves.
Starting from the chairs we sit in our office to the mobiles we use, we can see the brilliant touch of Frederick W Taylor, only if we are willing to see it!
Let me just give you the picture in bulleted points (after all, this is web and not a book and I value your time(That's a hint for my next blog!))

Being a worker in this timespan called the information era, we have no choice to stay ignorant. We have something that has to be learnt every single moment. Else what happens? In corporate lingo...we might become outdated (Hey, that makes me compare us to our PC's, Mac's and anti-virus softwares!...Oh my God,for a moment I forgot that I am a human!!!)
> How can I forget health and beauty!...Don't we corporates like being healthy to push ourselves better at work and be more appealing (convincing) to our clients, and win that contract!?
> Even now, after a good 9 hours work at the office, I am typing this with my music on! WHY? cos, I like music...NO, cos I can't afford to lose my cool right now... I got three more articles to write for a website and some cartoons for a column! Why do I do this? because Taylor lives in all of us.
> Then comes the weekend, the only time when we can equip ourselves with courses and trainings, like foreign language courses, certification courses and professionalism workshops etc...PASSION?...No...for career advantages and to have that "Edge" over others in this competitive world.
So here I see the idea of scientific management assume immortality in all of us...it doesn't care whether we know that it exists or not, we don't care whether it exists or not, But YES, IT DOES LIVE IN ALL OF US.

Trust me, I have a friend who couldn't make it to this line!

The glue that holds together a book with no pages
The glue that holds together a book with no pages.
We tend to become a part of a religion by birth or by choice. The concept of religion and God often thrills me and inspires me a lot, more than awe or respect towards it, I am often amazed by the prominence that both these concepts have gained. Any person of science generally disregards the concept of God, denying the existence of God, or worse... may even consider this as an act of folly!
But at this moment of Humanity's existence; especially considering that the entire period of humanity's existence till date, is in itself is a very short tenure compared to the long proud history of transformation and metamorphosis of life and death that the Earth has seen; it is very much safe to conclude that Humanity is still immature to survive without the concept of God, and the sheer fact that we have a long list of problems that don't really have to prevail, namely terrorism, pervertion, biases, casteism and whatever-ism, bears testimony to this. So, having said all that, now I can bravely express my opinion over this issue, and to be frank its not a very new idea. It has always been there and many humans who thought and lived better (in the contributions they have done to the world and humanity) than me, have and still do believe in this ideological inclination. I believe in this too, and it says, "Even if God doesn't exist, it is absolutely a neccessity to invent him". Now this is a very crude statement, but humanity is definitely not mature enough to handle itself with care!
Having been born in Hinduism, I was luckily positioned to understand this religion. Although not a master of it (well nobody can master a religion, as it is not martial arts..), I can still see the big picture and the big mistake that has been committed in the comprehension of the ideology. The thinkers who laid the backbone of the religion, comprehended science like none other. They never wanted the concept of God to be created, they just depicted the principles of good living ('Good' here points to a way of life that does no harm to others, while not compromising on the personal fulfillments;in short living a wise life) although the practice of which was left absolutely to the choice of its practicers/followers. Hinduism created many distinct characters like Ram, Krishna, Karna, Shakuni etc in its Epics, and characters like Gargi and Maitreyi in Upanishads, all with one idea in mind, for 'us' to learn living.
All that is fine. But apart from advices and teachings on how to live, Hinduism laid a lot of emphasis on Science and understanding of life. It discusses a lot on things like elements that constitute life on Earth, and on how there is sharing of a common energy that runs across everything,(both living and non-living on this planet), to be more precise, the entire universe(in fact it could also be a multiverse...who knows?!) . I invite you to think of it, or better, see it in your mind's television. Imagine the fire(the molten lava), wind (a whirlwind), water (your favorite river), earth(bhumi)(a seed sprouting out of humid fertile soil), aakasha (the aether/ether that pervails everywhere). Now for some of you, it might just be a simple known thingy, but imagine an American/African reading it...it wouldn't make much sense I guess. The same would have been the case when our ancestors who came up with this thinking and idea, wanted to impart this inference about the nature onto the next generation and pass-on the information to all the generations to come. So with the generations, we have come to know this just the way we know the alphabets of our language.
And moreover the concept makes perfect sense. If you wish to put my statement to test, just imagine this. You, I and pretty much everything else in the universe is made of controlled, stipulated, precise amounts of the same elements that make the earth,fire,wind,water,ether. Just take one single element, say.... water out of you, what are you after that? No big difference, its just that you are no more living, but we can never deny that all the materials that ever existed, that came into us to make us what we are, still does exist and will constitute something else. So, if thats true, then you and I must in every probability be carrying atleast one atom of hydrogen that constituted the dinosaurs long long ago or may be even that which constituted Einstein, or if Hinduism epics were true, we share a few atoms of Ram and Krishna, or Jesus or Buddha.. who knows(I mean...if they ever existed)?!
So the big picture was to comprehend the fact that we live in a universe, where change is the only constant happening, which is bound to happen. And in this process, we are not allowed to forget that we should not bring about small/huge changes that leads to bad things in others lives. That is why the logic of Karma was created by Hindus.
Nobody really had to create a think tank and come up with such ideas, its just that Hinduism has been there for quite a long time on this planet, so the idea had enough time to evolve into what it has become today. The concept, the ideas, the thoughts were too many, if only we could compare every single idea to be a free page, it would be really hard for any clerk to organize it. So the pages of hinduism had to be hard bound, so that they don't fly/fade away with time. And the innovation they came up with was the concept of God and religion. God and Religion, are awesome and failproof innovations that fuels itself with the fears, insecurities and diffidence of humanity. Can't digest the statement? Fine...let me ask you a question..."Would the concept of God exist if man had no limitations namely hunger, lust and love?" Simple as that right?!
Hence the Religion and the concept of God was the glue intended to hold these pages of wisdom in place, and for the book to stay integral. But unfortunately, its just the glue that remains and the glue now has no idea what is it binding together, but the glue has gained prominence and we worship the glue, while the papers have been long lost.

Having reached 22 years of age and having completed my under graduation in B.E Biotechnology, I must not be writing this page/article and in fact I should be giving reasons like I am not interested or I don't have the time etc for not writing this article on this subject, which should actually be irrelevant to me.
But sadly,I am writing this article by dedicating lavish time and thought, for this article to obtain a good shape and sense. What does "lavish" time and thought mean here? Well, it just means that I am not working presently for any organization/company. But the respected Tata Consultancy Services(TCS) has already given me a job through campus recruitment,making me a faithful engineer just waiting for his joining date call, to start serving the company, the company that braved to recruit us(The B.E Biotechnologys), and also has 100% optimism that they can turn us into productive assets for the organization. I
love you, TCS.
But hey, shouldn't I be working in a Biotechnology, Pharmaceutic or some Bio______ company? then why am I not?
do you say? its my fault?? then I say...NO
do you say? its the companies' lack of confidence on undergraduates workforce is the fault? No no...a big NO.
In a country like India, where even the grass blade has to undergo the worst of sufferings to prove itself to be worthy living and to survive, how would I even dare to say that, its the Biotechnology companies that should hire us and train us? its just illogical.
These companies are the outcome of so many hardships, obstacles tackled and innumerable visions. How can one expect them to bet on the unskilled workforce.
Did I just say "unskilled"! Oops, well thats a word which if an undergraduate Biotechnology student says to a journalist, he also places a request that his name not be disclosed!
but I am proud (and equally unhappy) to accept this fact. I do know that for any person to be in the learning phase of his life (irrespective of his age), he must accept the hard fact and learn to say "yes, its true...I don't know" and should also let go off the ego and say "please, teach me"!
So whose fault is it anyway?
Is it the fault of his/hers/theirs' who made the syllabus theoretical?
Is it the fault of him/her who "gets" "the accreditations" to his college, that pathetically lacks the infrastructure required.
Is it the fault of the authorities who help the private college "businessmen" in "getting" the accreditations, for the material benefits they "get", as the dog biscuits!
Is it the fault of the student who rebels so much with his parents for his long hair liberty, for his rights to wear the worn+torn jean, but has pathetically and pusillanimously forgot to rebel with the faculty and the college chairman, asking
for the infrastructure and the materials he/she needs to equip himself with the knowledge (theoretical+practical) that the industry demands in him.
Isn't the fault on the student, who settled for an easy option of getting his undergraduate degree project done in some lab (so called training centers/ finishing schools!), that which gets everything done, even the reports! and then submit it merrily!
The faculty knows this, the external examiner who judges his project work knows this, the parents know this. But why is this a "Ok" and accepted strategy now?
Because its good to play safe! The student feels his burdens reduced, parents get the assurance that the kid although may not score high, but will surely not fail. The teachers and faculty support this because it saves them the time and effort, so this is the WIN-WIN situation that has been created, that makes it "OK" with everyone. But this is the vicious cycle that is creating a Lose-lose situation.
I wish someone had said this, so that I could quote this saying in this page with his/her name below it. But having nobody said this before, I now say this...
"The whole concept of business conspires around luxury and laziness"
"your ignorance is someone's profit, someone's ignorance yours"
SO, now if you had chosen the compromised ways, then life gives you compromised option in the future.
There was one history teacher of mine whom I hated the most, but she was the one who told us the saying that I love the most,
" All that differentiates extraordinary from the ordinary is an extra"

Isn't the fault on the student, who settled for an easy option of getting his undergraduate degree project done in some lab (so called training centers/ finishing schools!), that which gets everything done, even the reports! and then submit it merrily!
The faculty knows this, the external examiner who judges his project work knows this, the parents know this. But why is this a "Ok" and accepted strategy now?
Because its good to play safe! The student feels his burdens reduced, parents get the assurance that the kid although may not score high, but will surely not fail. The teachers and faculty support this because it saves them the time and effort, so this is the WIN-WIN situation that has been created, that makes it "OK" with everyone. But this is the vicious cycle that is creating a Lose-lose situation.
I wish someone had said this, so that I could quote this saying in this page with his/her name below it. But having nobody said this before, I now say this...
"The whole concept of business conspires around luxury and laziness"
"your ignorance is someone's profit, someone's ignorance yours"
SO, now if you had chosen the compromised ways, then life gives you compromised option in the future.
There was one history teacher of mine whom I hated the most, but she was the one who told us the saying that I love the most,
" All that differentiates extraordinary from the ordinary is an extra"
SO WHOSE FAULT IS IT? I leave it to your intellect and good judgment...let me know by commenting below.
Why a sickness is no less than a blessing?
Anyone who follows me closely on twitter either knows by my long absence or by my updates from the net cafe that I just recovered from a very serious viral fever and allied diseases! lemme just give you the list.
It started with fever, then the temperature shooted dangerously high to 104 degree, so started intensive medication…the Hopeless Acura(a multispeciality clinic in Koramangala, Bangalore) doctors gave such an intensive medication that I can hardly stand now, nor can I talk! From the stomach to the mouth its all ulcers!
BUT HEY! one thing… Being an optimist I always say, enjoy every single chance you get to enjoy. I have a very long experience of enjoying such sicknesses, right from chicken pox, to typhoid to jaundice (am a kind of immune man now!)
But the post title is why a sickness is no less than a blessing?
TRUE, and to make complete sense one more thing has to be brought to your notice, that is throughout this illness, my laptop was inactive hence my internet inaccessible, all because my acer laptops charger pin got an illness!
The day just before I got ill, which was about 15 days after my Engineering course was over, I had a very strange and powerful feeling. The feeling my dad always advised me to overcome and wanted me to learn to enjoy that feeling.
It was nothing but “boredom”. But hey, 4 years of fast paced engineering routine, fast info gathering in internet, fast reading, fast comprehension and fast exams, fast sleeps….fast fast and only fast…and how can you expect me to slow down all of a sudden!?!?
But I did, I had to. I wonder whose wavelegth was tuned to read my mind’s turbulence and the boredom signals that amplitude modulated my thought waves! I fell sick.
But during this sickness I had to slow down, no internetm no fast moves, no bike riding…finally had to turn to books!
The moment I touched a book, the first thought that brought a smile on my face was this…” I was once on the internet too deeply searching for an information for my nanotech project. Slowly internet was so much a genie that reading papers, books everything vanished in no time. I even thought with internet being there why would someone read books slowly for months and then get to comprehend on some issue (eg.thing like AIDS in Africa, global meltdown etc)”

Sickness is bound to make you feel uncomfortable, and when you feel uncomfortable or at dis-ease you are out of your comfort zone, thats when you try new stuffs and at times we get to know that there are other beautiful things than our regular routine!

whats a green roof?
I was selected as a climate champion this year for my idea on green roofs as a mitigation strategy for climate change mitigation. A lot pf people have been asking me how different is a green roof different from a roof top garden...
Now thats a good question...The point is roof gardening is about growing plants on roof tops ,usually in pots or in containers that have soil, this vessel/pot/container is the layer that separates the roof and the soil with plants.
Green roof does not have this layer, and is a lot more complicated!
Pictures always mean a lot (what would you prefer? me describing a girl in a beautifully written paragraph or a single picture of hers???!!! ) Thats exactly why I am adding some links that hold the pics of some beautifully designed green roofs...
